For the past 13 years, the National Autobody Council’s (NABC™) Recycled Rides® program has been coordinating the repairs and donations of vehicles to families of need. Over just the past few years, the program has organized the donations of over 2,500 vehicles. What an amazing accomplishment within the collision repair industry! So, what exactly happens in this program? Well, the process involves the collaboration and support of many industry segments. The vehicles are donated by insurance companies, materials are donated by parts and paint manufacturers, and local collision repair shops donate their labor to repair the vehicles. Some shops have gone the extra mile to solicit local retail businesses to join in by providing gift cards for gas or automotive services as well as gift items such as toys and supplies for recipients and their families.
The main goal of the Recycled Rides program is to represent the industry as best as possible. Doug Schlueter, I-CAR Principal, MSO Business Development, sits as co-chair for the NABC Recycled Rides Committee. “This program is an incredibly positive experience to be a part of. When you see someone who is in need receive a vehicle, it’s a very special moment.” Schlueter says.
NABC Recycled Rides® for Schools is another successful program of the NABC Recycled Rides. Aimed at technical schools and colleges, this program provides students enrolled in vocational schools with a valuable opportunity to learn their trade with hands-on training on late-model vehicles. Schlueter says, “This program for schools is a great learning experience bringing students closer together within the industry. The program gives students an opportunity to strengthen relationships with local businesses and organizations while changing the lives of others.”
Since its inception in 2007, this program has been able to change the lives of thousands. NABC members are in a unique position to change and save lives by teaming up with collision industry colleagues to refurbish and donate these vehicles to those in need. Find out how to become a NABC member to participate in the Recycled Rides program. In order to participate, collision repair shops and schools need to be active members of NABC.
This nationwide community service project could not be accomplished without the collaboration of insurers, collision repairers, paint suppliers and many others. The vehicles are donated to families and affiliates as well as other deserving service organizations. This program not only changes the lives of those in need, but it also provides an opportunity to build relationships and positively impact communities.
